We were lucky to spend a few weeks of our summer vacation back home on O’ahu where we spent some much needed time with family. While there, we decided to take a day trip to the Big Island of Hawai’i, just my Mom, my husband, and me. It had been over 20 years since my last trip to the Big Island and I was excited to finally return. We spent our rainy day in Hilo taking in the sights. Our first stop, beautiful Rainbow Falls. Since there was a lack of sunshine, we didn’t get to see the rainbow. No biggie, though. The falls were gorgeous.

We took a little hike through a lava field teeming with new life and rich, black sand. At the end of the trail we stumbled upon a beach, waves crashing against the rocky shore.

We spent a good chunk of our day driving, stopping along the way for photo ops.

My favorite stop of the day was Kilauea Volcano National Park where we viewed the active crater, steam vents, and lava tube. Though I didn’t photograph the steam vents and lava tube, I did capture some photos of the crater and surrounding area.

We had a great day on the Big Island, exploring Hilo and eating yummy local food.
